How it works/how-it-works

A scouting report, taken apart

Below is one complete report, in the order the product’s own contract fixes, with a note beside every section saying what it is for and why it sits where it does. Reading it is the fastest way to understand what Avanti Scout produces.

The gap, left standing: −0.7.54 of 268 reviews set aside, 31 for signs of manipulation and 23 for being about something else.

The specimen’s hallmark. Each punch opens what it answers. The hallmark is read at one decimal; the report below gives the same figures to two.

What happens between the link and the report

The scouting metaphor is not decoration. The analysis genuinely has discrete, explainable stages, so the product narrates them while it works rather than showing a spinner. A spinner would waste the one moment when the user is most willing to be told how the thing they are about to trust actually operates.

  1. 01Gathering reviews

Every review we can lawfully reach for this listing, across every platform that carries it, through an official route where one exists and a licensed provider where one does not.

  2. 02Checking for manipulation

Timing bursts, rating distribution shape, reviewer clusters and duplication, checked across the whole set.

  3. 03Reading for detail

What reviewers actually said about the things that matter for a hotel, as opposed to for a drill or a boiler engineer. Different category, different questions.

  4. 04Checking what has changed

Whether the listing today is the listing the older reviews describe. New owner, new chef, refurbishment, product revision.

  5. 05Writing up

A short brief in plain English, which may only say what the earlier stages produced. If it mentions an aspect or a review that the structured stages did not produce, it is rejected and written again rather than published.

This is a specimen

The Hollow Oak, Bristol, does not exist. This report was assembled from the published report contract rather than produced by scouting a real hotel, and every number in it is illustrative. It is stamped on every section so that no single screenshot of it can be mistaken for a finding about a real business.

The structure, the field names, the confidence vocabulary and the section order are not illustrative. They are exactly what the product produces, section for section.

The key to the report

Twelve sections, in a fixed order the client cannot rearrange, because the order is part of the product. The first eight are the report; the last four are the record that makes it checkable.

02

Summary

A short brief in plain English. It may only state what the earlier stages produced, and it is regenerated rather than published if it strays.

The rooms were refurbished in the autumn of 2025 and the reviews change with the fabric. Guests placed in the annexe, which the works did not reach, still describe tired carpets, a bathroom extractor that did not work and a lift that was out of service for a fortnight. Guests in the main building describe new bathrooms and a quieter night on the courtyard side. Street-facing rooms on the first and second floors are still reported as noisy at the weekend by guests in both buildings. A cluster of twenty-four five-star reviews posted inside seven days in November 2025 has been set aside, so the rating below is drawn from the reviews that remain. Breakfast and the price of parking are the two complaints that survive the refurbishment.

03

What has changed

The window the report covers, and the moments the reviews themselves say the listing changed: a new owner, a refurbishment, a new chef, a product revision.

Reviews from 4 November 2025 to 21 August 2026.

04

Aspect scorecard

The things that matter for this category, each rated separately, each with its reasoning and the reviews it was drawn from. An aspect that cannot cite its sources does not render at all.

  • Cleanliness

    4.35

Rooms are reported as clean on arrival throughout the window, and the two complaints about bathroom mould both concern annexe bathrooms. Housekeeping is described as daily and unobtrusive.

    drawn from 7 reviews

  • Room condition

    3.10

Refurbished rooms are described as well finished, and reviewers who were placed in the unrefurbished annexe describe chipped furniture and a wardrobe door off its runner. The two accounts sit in the same window, which is why the score is lower than the cleanliness score.

    drawn from 6 reviews

  • Noise

    2.85

Street-facing rooms are reported as noisy after eleven at night at weekends, with reviewers naming the taxi rank and the bar opposite. Courtyard rooms are described as quiet by the same reviewers.

    drawn from 5 reviews

  • Location

    4.62

Reviewers travelling for the theatre and the station both describe the walk as under ten minutes. Drivers record the car park as a separate charge rather than as part of the room rate.

    drawn from 6 reviews

  • Staff and service

    4.05

Reception is described as quick to move a guest off the street side once the noise was raised, and two reviewers record a late checkout given without a charge. Two others describe a single unstaffed period at breakfast.

    drawn from 5 reviews

  • Value for money

    3.24

Reviewers name their rates: one hundred and forty pounds midweek, two hundred and ten pounds on a Saturday in July. Parking at eighteen pounds a night and breakfast at seventeen pounds a head are named as the reason the stay was judged expensive rather than the room rate itself.

    drawn from 6 reviews

  • Photographs versus reviews

    2.90

Six reviews describe a room smaller than the photographed one, and four of those name the annexe. Three describe the courtyard view where the listing photograph shows the garden. The roll-top bath in the listing photographs is named by two reviewers as present only in the suites.

    drawn from 6 reviews

An aspect that cannot cite the reviews it was drawn from fails validation and is never served. That is a rule of the report, not a preference of the interface.

05

Outliers

The reviews that disagree with everything else, and what we make of each: a genuine one-off, a reviewer describing something else, an external factor, or a possible fabrication.

  • Google, review 9

    Reviewer confusion

The review describes a different listing.

  • Tripadvisor, review 88

  • Tripadvisor, review 118

    Possible fabrication

The language does not read as an authentic account, and it is not counted.

Manipulation summary

How much of the corpus was set aside or discounted, on which named signals, in how many cases. Written as a statement about a body of reviews and never about a business or a person.

31 of 268 reviews in this set were set aside and 19 were counted at reduced weight, on signals recorded as burst timing (24), reviewer account pattern (12), template language match (17), photo reuse (6), reviewer network cluster (9). These are patterns in the review corpus, consistent with the practices the CMA guidance addresses. They are not a finding about the business or about any reviewer.

An invented hotel. No real business is described by this report.

What the report will not do

  • It will not force a verdict. Where the evidence is thin or contradictory the confidence band says so and no rating is shown at all. That is a designed result state with its own layout, not an error.
  • It will not hide the reviews it discounted. Every set-aside review stays retrievable with the reason for its treatment, which is a rule of the report, not a preference of the interface.
  • It will not name anybody. Every finding is a statement about a body of reviews, attributed to a signal and carrying a count.
